Sarah McClellan Named Next Women's Soccer Head Coach

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Following a national search, Roberts Wesleyan College athletic director Bob Segave has announced that Sarah McClellan has been selected to become the next head coach of the women's soccer program.

"I am excited to bring Sarah on board as head coach of the program," said Segave. "Sarah is an excellent coach, who excelled as a player at the Division I and professional levels. She brings significant credibility from her playing experience and time as a coach at all three NCAA divisions. I am confident that Sarah will provide excellent leadership and mentoring as she develops our student-athletes on and off the playing field."

McClellan will assume her duties as the program's sixth head coach effective July 1.

McClellan comes to the Redhawks after spending eight seasons (2008-2015) as head coach at Binghamton, a Division I program. During her tenure, the Bearcats advanced to the America East Conference tournament five times which included a trip to the championship game in 2009. McClellan also guided her teams to the conference semifinals in 2008 and 2011.

"I want to thank the search committee and especially thank President Porterfield and Bob Segave for their belief in me," said McClellan. "I am truly blessed to have this amazing opportunity to lead the women's soccer program. I can't wait to get to know the team and work with them this preseason; we want to build on last season's success and challenge ourselves to reach new heights!"

McClellan came to Binghamton from Drury (Mo.), a Division II member, where she served two years as the assistant coach (2004-2005). McClellan then served as head coach of the Maryland Pride in the Women's Premier Soccer League in 2006.

Prior to her time at Drury, McClellan was the lead assistant at Goucher (Md.), a Division III member, during the 2003 season. That squad went 8-7-4 and in the process, completed the second-best turnaround in the nation from the previous year.

Off the field, McClellan helped all of her teams earn NSCAA Team Academic recognition for maintaining a team GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Her 2013-14 squad produced a 3.42 grade-point average, including a lofty 3.46 GPA during its busy fall season. A department-high 21 players were named to the Fall Semester AD Honor Roll (min. 3.3 GPA).

In 2012-13, Binghamton posted a 3.44 GPA - second-highest in the America East. McClellan's team was also recognized by the NCAA with its top academic distinction. For the second straight year, the program earned an NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) Public Recognition Award, which is reserved for teams whose multi-year APR is in the top 10 percent across the country within their sport.

Sarah is a 2003 graduate of Maryland, where she played under U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame member and World Cup Champion Shannon Higgins-Cirovski. The Terrapins advanced to the NCAA Tournament twice in her three seasons on the squad. After earning her Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, McClellan completed her Master's degree in Physical Education at Drury.

As a professional, McClellan spent four years playing in the pre-professional W-League and the WPSL. Among her post-collegiate accomplishments, McClellan garnered a national award from the WPSL in 2005, being named to the season's WPSL All-Stars First Team.

A member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America since 2003, McClellan holds an NSCAA Premier diploma and a United States Soccer Federation "A" license - the highest coaching badge awarded. She is also a member of the United States Soccer Federation.

The Roberts Wesleyan women's soccer program has posted six-consecutive winning seasons and is coming off their first trip to the NCAA Division II National Championships after making a run to the championship game East Coast Conference tournament.
