What Our Grads Say

"Although I don't directly use music in my professional life, the B.A. in Music at Roberts allowed me to develop a level of discipline, critical thinking, and creativity that wouldn't have been possible otherwise. Being able to study both music and communication allowed me to look at both disciplines from a different perspective and develop innovative projects that were essential for my research and my graduate school applications."

M.A. in Communication from Villanova University (2014)

"Dr. Jeffery McGhee was instrumental to not only who I am as an artist but also as a person and educator. He taught me the value of grace and patience in teaching, both as a teacher and as a student. He embodies the lived philosophy of "hang on tightly, but let go loosely" – always encouraging me to achieve my goals and pursue my passions but meeting me with a warm embrace when I do not quite get there. And, even now, whenever I get a moment to return to Rochester, he is the first to offer me a cup of coffee and a smile.  As a musician, Dr. McGhee taught me the importance of detail and nuance, particularly in crafting and performing art song. More importantly, I learned that to sing is more than just proper posture and breath control - to sing is to share a story. Performing is more than just notes on a page, it is the very blood that runs through our veins."

Nathan Stenburg recently performed in the world-premiere of Under This Roof. Written by Barbara Kingsley and directed by James A. Williams, the play was presented by Full Circle Theatre Company at the Guthrie Theatre (an internationally renowned member of the League of Resident Theatres in Minneapolis). The play ran from May 4 – 20, 2018, and Nathan played Mason, a character with a developmental disability. Nathan is passionate about this play, as its themes of race, disability, and the use of inclusion casting relate to his PhD research. In May, 2017, Nathan received his Masters of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary. His area of interest was the Performativity of Religion and Disability. More broadly, Nathan’s research interests include sociology, philosophy of religion, performance (primarily film and theatre) and disability studies, disability and sports, and law. He’s also an American Exercise Council (ACE) Certified Personal Trainer.

“The BA Degree in Music from Roberts gave me the flexibility to take additional courses in other fields, and maintain a student work-study position in the Finance Department at RWC. My music degree is what got me into grad school for voice, but that work-study job is what got me another more advanced position in Accounting. Now, I use both skill sets in my position at Eastman to connect with and support students and faculty in the Department of Financial and Human Resource Services."

“My BA degree from Roberts has prepared me for my current and future career in so many ways. I think the biggest impact it had on me was the fact that the music faculty and courses challenged me and took me out of my comfort zone. I gained so much confidence in myself not only as a musician but as a professional. Knowing that my professors had confidence in me, even when I did not, helped me shift my perspective and trust that I was going down the right collegiate path.”

  • Bachelor of Arts in Music and Psychology
  • Masters in Social Work from Roberts Wesleyan College
  • I played viola with the RWCCO all throughout undergrad and grad school and now I am soon to begin my 8th year with the orchestra, 2nd year as a community member. I also participate in the alumni/community choir as often as I get the chance.
