RWC SIFE Wins Regional Competition
Roberts Wesleyan College SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise) team returned to Rochester as winners after participating in the Tarrytown, NY SIFE USA Regional Competition on April 4. The event was one of 16 SIFE USA Regional Competitions being held across the United States in March and April.
After presenting a report of their year-long community outreach projects to a panel of business leaders, the Roberts Wesleyan College SIFE team was named a SIFE USA Regional Champion. The team will now advance to the national level of SIFE competition, at the SIFE USA National Exposition May 13-15 in Chicago, Illinois.
SIFE Fellow and Professor Ervin Starr states, “We continue to be pleased with the level of excellence in service from students at Roberts Wesleyan College. Our SIFE team gave an outstanding presentation capturing the essence of what they have accomplished this year – we were pleased that the business community, serving as judges, recognized the amazing work of RWC SIFE.”
SIFE is an international non-profit organization active on more than 1,400 university campuses in 48 countries. SIFE teams create economic opportunities in their communities by organizing outreach projects that focuses on: market economics, entrepreneurship, personal financial success skills, and business ethics.
During this academic year, the Roberts Wesleyan College SIFE team organized 12 projects in the Rochester community, including Project OPAL (Observing, Photographing, and Advancing Lives.) Project OPAL is a new initiative created this year to raise awareness and recognition of the challenges single parents face in the Rochester community. 13 families from Catholic Family Center, Lafayette Housing Center, and Wilson Commencement Park volunteered to take pictures of people, places, and things representing their challenges and dreams. The photos are being put into a professional display that will go up in downtown Rochester at the end of April.
Jenna Kepich, senior communication major and project leader of OPAL states, “I’m really hoping this display will inspire others to not only recognize the challenges that single parents face, but to think about ways they can contribute to helping these families—maybe even by volunteering at places like the Catholic Family Center.”
