Types of Federal Student Aid

  1. Grants: Financial aid that generally does not need to be repaid.
  2. Work Study: Opportunities to earn money while attending school.
  3. Loans: Borrowed educational funds that must be repaid with interest.

Grants

Grants are financial aid that usually doesn't need to be repaid. There are three types:

Pell Grant

For the 2025-2026 school year, eligible students can receive up to $7,395.

The amount may be pro-rated based on the students’ eligibility and enrollment.

Undergraduate students can receive up to 12 semesters (600%).

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

Awarded through us to students with exceptional financial need. This is subject to availability of funds.

An undergraduate student must have a Student Aid Index (SAI) low enough to receive a Federal Pell Grant in order to be eligible for a Federal SEOG.

Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH)

Up to $4,000 per year for undergraduate and graduate students who are taking or will be taking course work necessary to become an elementary or secondary teacher.

Does not have to be repaid unless you fail to carry out the service obligation, in which case you must repay as a Direct Unsubsidized loan with interest accrued from the date the grant was disbursed.

You must complete TEACH Grant Initial and Subsequent Counseling and a new ATS each year that you receive a TEACH Grant.

Work Study

Federal College Work Study (CWS) provides jobs for enrolled students with financial need who have completed the FAFSA.

Most Federal CWS jobs pay minimum wage. However, employment on campus and hours worked cannot be guaranteed.

Loans

Loan funds are sent to Roberts and applied to your student account.

If borrowing, you must complete a Master Promissory Note for all loans. If you're a student borrowing, you must also complete the Loan Entrance Counseling.

Eligibility requires at least half-time enrollment. Lifetime borrowing limits are:

  • $31,000 for dependent students (up to $23,000 subsidized)
  • $57,500 for independent students (up to $23,000 subsidized)

Subsidized Loans

These are need-based.

  • Freshman year: $3,500 max
  • Sophomore year: $4,500 max
  • Junior & Senior years: $5,500 max

Apply for these by filling out the FAFSA.

Roberts Wesleyan University’s FAFSA Code: 002805

Unsubsidized Loans

This is not need-based, but there is a max amount you can take out every year.

  • Sophomore year: $6,500 ($4,500 of that could be subsidized)
  • Junior & Senior years: $7,500 ($5,500 of that could be subsidized)

You can apply for this by filling out the FAFSA.
