Freshman 411 – Fall Fun

0 0

Hello everyone, and welcome to the first-ever publication of the Freshmen 411! This column is meant to be a fun and informative place where freshmen (and upperclassmen if they please) can learn information on the surrounding area, fun things to do, tips on how to be successful for this academic year, and much more. For this very special first edition, I’ll detail all of the wonderful places to explore and events to look out for in the month of October. Now, most of the list is stuff you can do anytime in fall – it’s not just exclusive for this month, however, they are great ways to kick off the season.

It wouldn’t be fall in New York if there wasn’t the wonderful foliage. There are a number of ways to experience the breathtaking colors, however, I highly recommend either going on a hike on one of the many trails in the area, such as Letchworth State Park, or by enjoying Halloween and fall foliage trolley rides at the New York Museum of Transportation. Offered on October 9th, 16th, and 23rd, you can take a vintage trolley ride to a pumpkin patch where you can paint pumpkins and enjoy cider donuts. For only $8, the trolley ride provides a wonderful rounded experience of fall, although reservations are required.

Another crucial event to participate in, especially in this area of New York, is apple picking. Above all else, Wickham Farms is the best place to go to enjoy this staple. Located in Penfield, New York, you can find not only apple picking, but also a corn maze, animal farm, and giant slide. Tickets are a bit pricy with the Pick and Play option (what allows you to partake in everything) costing $25.95 before tax. If you were just to pick apples, the ticket would cost $10.95.

The last place I suggest going to is the Genesee County Village and Museum. Not only is it a wonderful place to learn the history of New York, but they have two events that are wonderful for the Halloween season. The first is A Night with Edgar Allen Poe (October 27, 6:30-8:00 pm), and the second is Spirits of the Past: A Walk in the Dark (October 21, 21, 23, 28, 29, & 30).
