We by Emily Mergler
This world is one of the cruelest places to make a life.
Hate festers in the cracks of humanity,
And in those feeble wounds, the universe pours salt and rubs it bitterly.
But for some reason, people are beautiful.
We bring flowers to graves to talk to those who can not hear us.
A parent soaked by the rain covers their child with an umbrella.
That child cries for the squished ant under a shoe,
Wondering about the ant’s family, never thinking twice about the differences they share.
This place is horrible, and yet somehow, we protect (and love?) one another.
