The Secret of Miner

A creative writing piece by Arturo Mejia

I walk down the halls of Miner. It’s 2:00 am. I just got back from the gym. Late night workouts are always the best. They help soothe the mind when sleeping is no longer an option due to my broken sleep schedule. Those all nighters working on projects really got to me.

Anyway, Miner’s always been lit up by lights. And that’s normal, right? I mean, that’s got to be the norm to prevent just about anybody from walking up to campus unannounced. Well, as I make my way to the flight of steps, I hear one of the first floor doors swing wide open. Wait, that was the way I just came from.

“Dang, you’re up this late?!” I shout out into the corridor I just came from, talking as if I wasn’t freaked out by the sudden opening of the door. I stay by the steps just to see if anyone comes from that corridor again. Wait, that’s the door leading to the kitchen.

BANG! BANG!! BANG!!! BANG!!!! The noise grows increasingly louder. I’m currently at the foot of the steps of the first floor, around the corner from the kitchen. Suddenly, the noises cease. The doors stop banging. “Wow, come on. Who is it? Joey? Nah, I bet it’s you Charlie!” I begin hurling out random names to disguise my petrification.

“Is it… Michael?” Immediately, the lights shut off. All the lights in Miner as of right now, are completely off. Right away, my first instinct is to take for the exit closest to me. So I head straight in the direction of the door on the opposite side of the kitchen, so I can leave Miner immediately. I was pretty sure I was the only person on the first floor, besides – obviously – the class clown who was closing doors in the middle of the night.

But when I turned the corner, the lights flickered, allowing me, for a split second, to see shadows on the ground. I saw mine, one in front of me. But why was there one behind me?
