Commuting

As someone who has now experienced several semesters as both a resident and a commuter, there are some stark contrasts between the two experiences that I feel deserve to be highlighted. As a resident, every campus amenity is very easily accessible during most, if not all hours of the day. Study groups are easy to coordinate, sporting events are convenient to attend, and friends are always within walking distance. The sense of community that everyone desires is very strong.
However, switching from the residential life to commuting is a jarring change of pace. It becomes infinitely more important to keep track of what needs to be done while on campus. Once I leave for the day, it’s unlikely that I’ll be coming back unless it’s a life or death situation. Meal plans are no longer a necessity, but what if I forget to pack a snack for the day? Residents have the ability to provide their commuter friends with a guest pass for a meal, but this isn’t something that is widely known across campus. Going to events or games means extra planning and coordination. For the most part, the broadcasting of campus events tends to be plastered on the doors of every building or announced at chapel. Being someone whose classes are located primarily in one building, I tend to stay in one spot during the day and will miss a lot of this information.
Unfortunately, there is a disconnect that exists between commuting students and the rest of Roberts. While I don’t feel like I’m not a part of the Roberts community, it is significantly harder to get involved and be social with fellow students. I am hopeful that the grand opening of the new building on campus will remedy some of that.
