Doctor Who’s 60th Anniversary

0 0

The British television show Doctor Who will celebrate its 60th anniversary on November 23, 2023. Its stories revolve around a Time Lord, the Doctor, and their adventures in time and space. The show started in 1963 and is still going to this day. When the original actor from the show, William Hartnell, decided to leave, the showrunners kept the series alive by giving him a way to cheat death: regeneration. Every time an actor has left, they’ve chosen a new one to fill their place. There have been about fourteen doctors, each one facing countless monsters, some alien and some human.

This show has been a part of my life for over a decade now. It seems like just yesterday that the 50th-anniversary episode aired. I watched the first airing with one of my school friends and the second airing with my sister and her friends. The memories are bittersweet, but I would not change them for the world.  I doubt that I would be the same person without it.

Over the years, Doctor Who has become my comfort show and probably the only one I’ve never gotten tired of. I cannot count how many times I’ve rewatched it and how much I’ve quoted it. Perhaps it is the constant hope and eventual win that most stories have in common. The quote, “In 900 years of time and space, I’ve never met anyone who wasn’t important,” also comes to mind. The show might have been targeted toward children, but it displays so well the complexities of people. Situations are not always black and white; people are never fully good or bad. It also explores hard topics, like genocide, slavery, and even mental health, in a way that is appropriate for younger audiences but just as influential for adults.

I’ll end with this quote: “You don’t just give up. You don’t just let things happen. You make a stand! You say no! You have the guts to do what’s right, even when everyone else just runs away.”
