New Building, Yea or Nay?

0 0

In the new semester, almost every student has visited the Golisano Community Engagement Center. How do they feel about it?

Some see it as a fantastic place to unwind with friends or get some valuable homework done. Jared Cicero is particularly fond of the pool table, where he occasionally spends evenings honing his skills. Mitchell Johnson is a fan of the so-called “tortilla trees” that manage ambient noise to maintain a lower volume regardless of how many conversations are happening.

However, not all opinions are as positive. Some students feel that resources used to construct the building could have been better used in different areas on campus. Another common complaint is that the layout of entrances and lack of a crosswalk or sidewalk leading to the chandelier entrance is poorly designed and encourages people to cross in front of Garlock, which could be dangerous.

Luke Plouffe describes the building as having an uncomfortable feeling, which isn’t an uncommon sentiment. Jared proposes a balance for community members being present to give space for student-focused bonding in the campus living room.

Student organizations such as SMAC, SALT, FREE, and even our own Beacon are already using the GCEC’s gathering spaces for meetings instead of being corralled into the beloved Ellen Stowe room – the extra event spaces are undoubtedly helpful. Time will tell how our attitudes may change and whether they get more positive or negative. Will we warm up to the feel, or will the novelty wear off? Regardless, it’s here to stay, so we may as well take advantage of it!
