The Death of the Queen and Her Controversial Legacy

0 0

On September 8, 2022, the news of the death of Queen Elizabeth II shocked the world. She was 96 years old and had reigned as queen for a whopping 70 years. Her funeral was on September 19th, and the entire country of England mourned. She was said to have died peacefully. Queen Elizabeth II will be succeeded by her son, King Charles III.
But though there are many who are mourning, there have been people celebrating. Queen Elizabeth II left behind a complicated legacy. She was crowned in 1953, but the decolonization of Africa did not start until the 1960s. Many people blame her for it, saying that she was complicit in the controversial colonization that England had done. However, the colonization started over a century before she was even born. Although the queen had no real power except in title, she had the chance to speak out, as she was still an influential person. But she did not, and people were greatly disappointed in her. Some think that the monarchy should be abolished, citing that the money could be used to help the people of England who are struggling.
While nobody is denying that this talk is important, many believe that Britain should wait to change monarchical politics and policies out of respect for her family and let people mourn. There is also the issue of whether celebrating someone’s death is morally okay to do, especially so soon after their death. What do you think? Should people be celebrating a death? How soon do you think it is okay to discuss the hard truths of her reign?
