Roberts Wesleyan is an independent, coeducational liberal arts college in the Christian tradition founded by the Free Methodist Church of North America. Established in 1866 as Chili Seminary, the name was changed to A.M. Chesbrough Seminary in 1885, and to Roberts Junior College in 1945. The New York State Board of Regents issued a charter granting baccalaureate degrees in 1949, at which time Roberts Wesleyan College became the new corporate name. The first graduate program was authorized in 1991. In 1998 Northeastern Seminary was founded at Roberts Wesleyan College.
The College remains committed to the mission of integrating a Christian worldview and a liberal arts education. Roberts Wesleyan is chartered by the Regents of the University of the State of New York and is a member of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
