President Deana L. Porterfield Recognized as Women of Excellence Recipient by Rochester Business Journal

Rochester Business Journal has selected Dr. Deana L. Porterfield, president of Roberts Wesleyan College and Northeastern Seminary, as an inaugural Women of Excellence recipient. The award recognizes 34 high-achieving women for their career accomplishments, community involvement, leadership and sustained commitment to mentoring.

“Deana is an amazing leader who has impacted both the college and the community through her vision, energy and mentorship of others,” Lisa Tiffin, director of grant development at Roberts Wesleyan College, said in her nomination. “As our first female president, she brings a high level of professionalism, respect and care for the people she encounters and leads. She is truly deserving of this honor.”

“President Porterfield is an inspirational leader who has continuously engaged the Roberts campus community to make an impact on the students we serve, preparing them to help transform the world in which we live today,” said David Basinger, chief academic officer at Roberts Wesleyan College.

Porterfield joined the Roberts Wesleyan College community as president in 2014. Prior to Roberts and Northeastern, she served at Azusa Pacific University for 26 years in various roles, including vice president for enrollment management, chief of staff, senior vice president for people and organizational development, and executive vice president of the online university. Originally from Watsonville, California, Porterfield earned a doctorate in organizational leadership from the University of La Verne in La Verne, California. She also holds a master’s degree in organizational management and a bachelor’s degree in music from Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, California.

Porterfield has also had a lasting impact on the campus community through the students she mentors, such as Malik Dare, a senior at Roberts Wesleyan College. “President Porterfield has motivated me to serve outside of the campus community with organizations such as Elev8, which helps encourage Rochester city school students to stay on track to graduate and pursue higher education. She’s inspired me to continue to help and mentor others within and outside the campus community.”

The Women of Excellence awards was presented Wednesday, April 11, at an awards celebration from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center, 123 East Main St. in Rochester.

Winners will be profiled in a magazine that will be inserted into the April 13 issue of the RBJ and available online at www.rbj.net. The event hashtag is #RBJWomenofExcellence.
