Campus Construction Update: Roberts Celebrates GCEC Construction with Beam Signing
The Golisano Community Engagement Center (GCEC) that is under construction on North campus is a building that begins a bright new chapter of the Roberts story. It will be the first building on campus to provide centralized meeting spaces and community interaction opportunities for all students.
More than 150 members of the Roberts community attended the beam signing event held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on March 29. Chocolate covered pretzels and popcorn were handed out and markers were provided to sign the steel girders already installed in the GCEC. Whether a simple signature, positive message, prayer or well wishes; students, faculty and staff signed a beam in this building. Signing the beam is a symbolic nod to the permanence of the building and its intended use to serve students and the Rochester community for generations to come as well as the role the facility will play in the college’s transformation.
As of 3/30/2022, the campaign has raised $11,842,971 or 79% of its goal. The Connect the Community campaign began in August 2019 with a $7.5 million gift from Paychex founder and philanthropist Tom Golisano to build the innovative new Community Engagement Center. The gift is the largest in Roberts Wesleyan’s history. The two-story center will be a hub for connection, collaboration, learning and student life resources.
At Roberts, connecting to the heart of our mission is important. This event created a moment to recognize the construction process and the impact this building will have through the Community Institutes as well as career development through real-life experiential learning. The attendees got to “leave their mark” on the building that will benefit both our students and the Greater Rochester community.
