Student Spotlight: Rahel Graves– Senior ‘17

What is the best thing about studying Business Administration?

The variety of courses available to us is one of the best things. The business department, as a whole, is a pretty friendly department and, as a student, you feel welcomed by the faculty and staff.

Where are you from?

I was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and raised there until I was 12 years old. In July 2006, my six siblings and I were adopted by my parents Robert and Lisa Graves. My family lives in Dansville, New York. The most challenging part of coming here was learning English. My native language is Amharic, and the two languages are totally different. I did not speak any English when I arrived in the United States. My parents did not speak any Amharic, so it was up to me to learn English very quickly! I remember learning basic words, like "Hello" and "UNO!" Besides learning a new language; I also had to adjust to a different culture and environment. I feel that is something I do every day as I continue to learn.

Tell me about what you think the community is like here at Roberts?

It is very diverse and open minded. I like that aspect of Roberts, because as a student I feel comfortable in my own skin. As a student, you can just be yourself around your friends and professors – there is no need to put on a fake persona. It is so nice to have friends who are diverse and open minded in my life.

What is your favorite food?

I have a sweet tooth, so pretty much anything with chocolate and peanut butter! But I also love my Ethiopian food!

Who is someone who has helped you grow here at Roberts?

I would say both of the Starrs! Professor Erv Starr is my advisor and I have had Carrie as a professor in many classes. Carrie is so much more than a professor, she is also a friend. She has taught me that whatever I do, I will learn as I go -- and that is the same with Professor Erv Starr. They are both always giving me great advice!

Where is your favorite place on campus?

The library study rooms are my favorite as it’s like having your own personal space. I like that I can talk to myself, about the work I am doing, and not feel weird about it (I don’t have to worry about someone watching me)! It’s also a quiet environment to escape to and get work done!

What is your favorite Course?

Creativity and Problem Solving with Carrie Starr was my favorite course. It really challenged me to find not only the problem but also the solution. I thought it was going to be easy, but towards the middle of the semester I realized that it’s hard to find that problem and solution, and this course pushed me to be better. It is different than actually doing your homework, it’s a hands-on course and that’s what I loved about it.

Do you have any Advice for incoming students?

Always say 'yes'! No matter what the situation or opportunity remember to always say yes to an opportunity to learn and grow!

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation, I'm planning on residing in Rochester and working for DiBroca Consulting Group where I can put what I learned at college into practice at this sales and marketing firm.
