Roberts to Host Summer Career Camps for Young Students with Financial Needs

Roberts Wesleyan College will host an overnight summer camp July 30-Aug. 3 for high school students to experience a “college student experience” right on campus. Students can choose one of five camps: nursing, pre-med, crime scene investigation, social justice and worship. This year, additional summer camp scholarships are available through significant support from the John F. Wegman Fund of the Rochester Area Community Foundation.

The summer camp offers 120 spots to high school students entering their sophomore, junior or senior year in fall 2018. The camp is in its second year and provides a unique resource for students to explore various careers and college life.

“These summer camps provide students the opportunity to experience their future,” said Amy A. Kovach, Ph.D., Director of Academic Summer Programs at Roberts Wesleyan College. “Students leave these camps with a greater knowledge of college life and concrete experience in a potential field of interest.  We are so excited to offer many scholarships this year. This allows us to make this educational opportunity an option for all students. “

Roberts Wesleyan will offer a full scholarship for 35 applicants, covering the cost of meals, overnight lodging, camp experiences and labs, field trips and more. These scholarships are made possible by the John F. Wegman Fund, Roberts’ Board of Trustees and individual donors.

The deadline to apply for the scholarship is this Friday, March 16. If chosen, recipients will be notified by April 16.

Scholarship criteria includes:

  • Student must have financial need as evidenced by receiving free or reduced lunch
  • Student must meet one of the following criteria:
    • Attend an inner-city church
    • Attend a Rochester City School District school
    • Be an Early Recognition Black Scholar
  • Student must have a cumulative high school GPA of 2.50 or better

If applying for the summer camp without financial aid, the deadline is July 13, 2018. For students who don’t receive or qualify for the scholarship, the cost per camper is $395, which covers the entire week’s housing, meals and activities.
