Level Placement and Progression
Placement - Language Assessment Scores
Prior to enrollment at the English Language Institute, students will take one of three language assessments, including Internet-based TOEFL (iBT), Paper-based TOEFL, or IELTS. Their score will determine their level placement.
69-74
(or 75-78 with any sub-score below 16)
5.5-6.0
(with no more than one sub-score at 5.0 or below)

(with no sub-score below 16)

(with all sub-scores >5.0)
Progression
In order to progress from one level to the next students must have an average grade of 80% in the core classes: Reading and Vocabulary / Analyzing Literature, Listening and Speaking, and Writing and Grammar, as well as receiving a Pass in Pronunciation/Conversation Partners.
Although most students complete a level in one semester, some students may require two semesters in a level to reach mastery.

- ELI 104 - Academic Writing and Grammar (Level 1-6: P/F)
- ELI 105 - Cultural Conversations & Field Experience (Level 1-6: P/F)
- ELI 106 - ELI Seminar (106-01, 106-02, 106-03) (Level 1-6: P/F)
- ELI 107 - Analyzing Literature (Level P/F)
- ELI 108 - Conversational Partners :evel(P/F)
- *ESL 101 - Course-Integrated Skills (P/F)
- *ESL 102 - Resource & Time Management (P/F)
*Note: Students in third term can elect to complete ESL courses to complete ELI with passing grade. **Note: ELI 103 and ELI 104 may require multiple terms to earn Level 6 mastery
