Students majoring in English specialize in the study of literature and select additional courses, or a minor, to prepare for specific careers where clear communication and critical thinking are valued. They are prepared for graduate study in English and related disciplines.

SPECIFICS OF THE ENGLISH B.A. DEGREE

Minimum Total Hours: 124

Total Liberal Arts Hours Required: 90

General Education Requirements: Per General Education list (see General Education Council). Exceptions: LIT 101 excluded (LIT 101, CMP 101/102 cannot count toward the major); American Sign Language may not be used to meet the foreign language proficiency requirement.

Minimum Requirements:  GPA of 2.3 in the major and overall; no grade less than C- in the major; minimum grade of C+ in CMP 101 and CMP 102.

Application to the Major: Special application form and requirements to be secured from the Department of Language and Literature or online at the department's intranet site and submitted at the end of the sophomore year.  (Note: The standard institutional major application will not be accepted.)  A minimum overall GPA of 2.3 is required for acceptance to the major.

Major Requirements: 39 hours as follows:

  • One upper-level composition course (CMP 320, 321, or 341);
  • Four survey courses (LIT 201, 202, 204, 205, 207, 208);
  • Two major author courses (LIT 303, 305, 312);
  • One theory course (CMC 301 or LIT 307);
  • Two senior-level literature courses (LIT 405 and either LIT 402 or LIT 403)
  • Nine semester hours of electives selected from any of the previously listed courses not already used to meet a requirement or from the following: LIT 304, 309, 314, 315.
  • Recommended but not required: CMC 409, HST 305, and WST 205.
