2022-23 Undergraduate Academic Catalog | School of Natural and Social Sciences | Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics | Majors

Physics, B.A., B.S.

[Physics—1902]

This program provides a strong foundation and preparation from which the graduate can proceed in a variety of significant directions.  The first two years include supporting courses in mathematics and computer science in addition to the introductory sequence of physics courses.  The last two years include additional supporting courses in mathematics along with advanced physics courses.

SPECIFICS OF THE PHYSICS B.A. DEGREE

Minimum Total Hours: 120

Total Liberal Arts Hours Required: 90

General Education Requirements: Per the Core Curriculum Requirements list (see General Education Council).Exceptions: the lab science and mathematics proficiency requirements are met through the major.

Minimum Requirements: Overall and major GPA of 2.0; no grade less than C- in the major.

Transfer Requirements: See institutional transfer policies.

Application to the Major: Standard institutional major application should be submitted at the end of the sophomore year.  A minimum overall GPA of 2.0 is required for acceptance to the major.

Major Requirements: 40 hours with a minimum of 24 hours in physics as follows:

  • 12 hours of required physics courses:  PHYS 2001*, 2002, 2003;
  • 12 hours of required mathematics courses:  MATH 2281*, 2282, 2283;
  • CSCI 2010 ;
  • 6 hours of physics electives from:  PHYS 3010, 3020, 4030, cross register for PHYS-Thermodynamics;
  • 6 hours of physics electives from:  PHYS 2110, 2120, 3220, 4050. (One elective from this group must be at the 3000- or 4000-level; to accomplish this, students may select an unused physics course from the above grouping.  PHYS 2110 and 2120  are recommended for Pre-Engineering students only.)

*It should also be noted that some introductory courses may require passing the math placement exam before course registration.
