Admissions Requirements

Requirements:

  • At least 60 hours of college credit with a C or better
  • A cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 on a scale of 4.0
  • Fewer than 30 hours of General Ed. and/or Content coursework still to be completed

Not required:

  • Entrance Exam (GRE/GMAT)
  • Bachelor's Degree

Before applying for a teacher’s certificate, you must obtain a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or teaching program. Earning a bachelor’s degree is typically a three-to-four-year program.

Then you will most likely have to complete a student teaching experience followed by taking your state examinations to prove you’re qualified, adding a few more years.

After these steps, you can apply for your teaching certificate, state requirements will vary, but this is the general process.

The Pathway to Teaching program is a unique bachelor’s degree completion program for individuals who want to become certified teachers. It’s designed to let you balance your studies with other commitments by taking classes one night a week.

You can earn a Bachelor of Science in Education with one of the following certifications:

  • Childhood Education and Students with Disabilities (Grades 1-6)
  • Adolescence Education in a specific content area and Students with Disabilities (Grades 7-12)
  • Students with Disabilities Generalist (Grades 7-12)

The program includes coaching through the certification process, review sessions for exams, and interview preparation with local school administrators.

New York State requires teachers to earn a graduate degree for professional certification. Roberts offers graduate programs to help you meet this requirement and further your teaching career.
