As part of our ongoing effort to highlight the talents and diversity of our staff, this spotlight focuses on Marna Distaffen ‘88 (Math Education) and Kirk Kettinger M ‘01 (M.S., Strategic Leadership), ‘92 (English). Both of them shared that what they have enjoyed the most about working at Roberts is the great people they have met and worked with over the years.

They both emphasize the importance of active participation and openness to new ideas for new staff members just starting their careers. Marna encourages individuals to engage fully, share their thoughts, and embrace new experiences while learning about the history of Roberts Wesleyan University and its founder. Kirk echoes this sentiment, urging newcomers to listen and absorb knowledge from those with experience, as blending fresh perspectives with established practices can foster great creativity. He highlights the significance of understanding the rich history of Roberts, noting that generations of remarkable individuals have shaped the campus community and impacted people around the world.

The best part of Marna and Kirk's workday lies in their interactions with others. Marna finds joy in hearing alumni share their stories and experiences at Roberts, deepening her connection to the community. For Kirk, the highlight is the time spent brainstorming and strategizing with colleagues in the office and collaborating with faculty and staff across campus. These moments of engagement and creativity enrich their daily work lives and strengthen their commitment to the university.

Both as a student and professional, Roberts has profoundly impacted their lives. Marna credits her education with providing essential skills for her career, while the opportunities to learn and try new things at Roberts have significantly boosted her confidence and abilities. Kirk describes his experience as very rewarding, highlighting the enjoyment and growth he has gained from collaborating with diverse people and departments throughout his time at the university.

The university has undergone many significant changes over the years. Marna notes the addition of new buildings, majors, online classes, sports, and a new mascot, alongside the transition to NCAA Division II and the change from a college to a university. Kirk emphasizes his experience witnessing the construction of the Howard Stowe Roberts Cultural Life Center during his first year, as well as the growth that followed, including working with four different presidents and the shift from NAIA to NCAA. Both highlight the remarkable transformation of the institution and the many students, faculty, and staff who have shaped their experiences.

Q&A

Why did you choose to work at Roberts?

Marna: I wasn’t looking to work at Roberts but was unemployed, and Ruth Logan approached me about a job. So really, Roberts chose me!

Kirk: I wanted to work in Christian Higher Education, and this is the place that gave me the opportunity. I never particularly wanted to work in Admissions, but it was a good entry-level position and ended up being a rewarding 16-year experience. It’s a great place to start a career in higher education because you work with prospective students and parents, faculty, staff, alumni, and offices across campus like Financial Aid, Registration, Athletics, and Facilities. I wouldn’t change that experience for anything.

How do you see your role connecting to Roberts' mission?

Marna: Providing support to the people who raise the funds and helping to steward those gifts ensures further and hopefully long term support so we can provide the funds needed to educate our students and ensure that Roberts can continue to do so into the future.

Kirk: The funds I help raise (with the support of many other people and offices across campus) contribute to the university’s stability, sustainability, and ability to complete projects that ultimately help students grow intellectually and spiritually.

What is your favorite verse?

Marna: One of my favorite verses is Psalm 46:10. I have it taped to my computer. It helps me remember that God has everything under control and reminds me to be still when I am stressed or having a rough day. I don’t always remember to focus on that, but when I do, I feel better.

Kirk: I memorized Psalm 1 as a child, which has always stuck with me. It’s a blueprint for a productive life that puts God and people first. I can’t say I always live up to its ideal, but it’s a source of inspiration and guidance that I have come back to often.

Both Marna and Kirk have had their share of funny and unusual incidents during their time at Roberts, highlighting the lighter moments that make their experiences memorable. Marna recalls a funny incident with a former boss who accidentally cut off part of his tie while using a paper cutter, prompting a good laugh. Kirk shares an unusual experience from a professional development trip to Seattle, where a colleague claimed to know former Seahawks Quarterbacks and Washington Commanders head coach (2008-09) Jim Zorn. After some playful skepticism and voicemail exchanges, they ended up spending three hours with Zorn and his family, discussing football and faith—a truly memorable encounter.

What keeps Marna and Kirk motivated is their deep connection to Roberts. Marna’s love for the institution stems from her long history within the Roberts community, while Kirk is driven by his enjoyment of the work and a desire to see Roberts thrive for decades to come. Together, their passion for the mission and future of Roberts fuels their dedication!
