Frequently Asked Questions

Psychology is the scientific study of human thoughts and behaviors.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, “psychologists study cognitive, emotional, and social processes and behaviors by observing, interpreting, and recording how people relate to one another and their environments.”

Research and experiments drive much of the field of psychology and its findings. Psychology is also largely associated with mental health care efforts and counseling.

To become a psychologist, you first need to start by obtaining your bachelor's degree. Aspiring psychologists usually get this in Psychology, but some may major in fields like sociology while taking elective courses in the psychology field.

After getting your bachelor's degree, you’ll most likely need a graduate degree, a requirement to become a licensed psychologist. You could choose to go through a master’s or doctorate program.

Additionally, gaining experience in the field of psychology and working with patients is helpful to the end goal of becoming a psychologist. You could complete an internship or research assistant position or even get an entry-level position in the field you’re interested in.

Following this, you’ll have to obtain the correct licensure to practice as a psychologist in your state. This comes with specific requirements, which differ from state to state.

The most obvious career path to pursue with a psychology degree is becoming a psychologist, which could include:

  • School Psychology
  • Neuropsychology
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Counseling Psychology
  • Forensic Psychology

Although the primary career path would be to become a psychologist, that’s not the only option for you.

With a psychology degree, you could also work in:

  • Education
  • Research
  • Business
  • Medicine
  • Social Work

According to Ziprecuiter:

Naturally, the numbers will differ by area, level, field, and position.
