Red Folder

The Red Folder is a national initiative in higher education that provides faculty and staff with an easy-to-understand guide to identify signs of student distress and effectively respond and connect students to proper support services.

This Spring 2025 we are excited to bring this initiative to Roberts Wesleyan University! We are confident that this will be a useful tool for faculty, staff, and coaches across campus to ensure the safety of students while promoting their comprehensive well-being.

The Red Folder contains:

  • Signs of distress
    • Academic/Athletic - frequent absences, decline in the quality of work, repeated requests for extensions on assignments
    • Physical/Behavioral - marked changes in appearance or hygiene, frequent fatigue or illness, unusual speech
    • Psychological - disclosures of distress, irritability, reports of concern from peers
    • Safety risk - aggression, threats, stalking, harassment
  • Tips for responding to a student who is in distress
  • Making appropriate referrals
  • A flowchart to help guide the determination of the course of action needed and any follow-up steps.
