Visual Art Education
The Visual Art Education major provides students with a strong foundation in the methods of art-making and theory in preparation for New York State certification. New York State certification in Visual Art Education is a specialized comprehensive degree that will allow successful graduates to teach kindergarten through grade 12. Those who receive New York State certification are granted reciprocity in thirty-eight other states.
The studio art component of Art Education major provides a strong first-year Foundations Program, including courses in art and design seminar (ARTS 1000), drawing (ARTS 1020), 2D design (ARTS 1030), 3D design (ARTS 1040), and digital media art (ARTS 1050).
After the first year, students begin work in their chosen studio concentration along with elective studio courses. Also, students study art history, theory, and criticism, as well as education theory and methods. Students take courses in general and special education concurrently from the Department of Teacher Education.
The program of study culminates with Student Teaching and an Art Capstone experience. The Capstone is an individually completed year-long faculty-mentored project in which students select and produce a body of work in art or design and prepare that work for exhibition.
Students should contact Visual Art for the required course listings and more detailed information.
