Millennials are growing up in a more challenging environment -
Professor of Business, Carrie Starr, annually conducts a Budgeting for College workshop for all incoming freshmen. The workshop is critical for new students entering Roberts as they begin to take responsibilities for their own finances. Students are encouraged to examine their current income, predict their earnng potential for the freshmen year and then plan out their expenses. They also gain practical tips on how to make money, save money and establish wise financial habits at the beginning of their college careers.
"Roberts undergraduate business students are required to take a class in Personal Finance & Economics (ECN 205), Starr said, and they can participate in the student endowment investment club where they become directly responsible for growing the college's endowment."
During the Personal Finance & Economics class students study what Scripture has to say about money, track their spending throughout the semester, establish personal budgets, learn about savings, giving and investing. There is also a focus on retirement, health insurance, life insurance, student loan repayment, car leases, mortgages, etc.
The goal is to prepare students to successfully manage their own finances now and in the future after they leave Roberts. Starr's book, Cheap Love, is one of the many class textbooks that shares examples of spending wisely in a dating, engaged and married relationship.
